Old believers have refused a church reformation made by patriarch Nikon in 17th century. This lead to split of Russian orthodoxy. Guardians of ancient traditions were persecuted for more than three centuries. In research of freedom of faith expression they went into the depth of forests, settled in remote hidden areas and led an detached and independent way of life based on close interaction with nature. 

After the revolution of 1917 a new wave of persecution have begun. Due to it lot of families have moved to Siberian taiga, far east of Russia or immigrated through Turkey and China to USA, Canada, countries of Latin America and Australia.
